The (Yukon) Frog Prince
The (Yukon) Frog Prince

The (Yukon) Frog Prince

Digital Illustration
12”x16”
2021

While out playing a few rounds of extreme bocce ball with her friends, our Yukon princess manages to loose one of her balls. After searching high and low, it’s finally discovered in a nearby shallow pond, also inhabited by a larger-than-life wood frog. Will she accept his help and friendship, or will the game be a forfeit?

This piece pays homage to a niche camping game I’ve played with my family for years, in which the regular rules of bocce ball are moved into the woods. Finding the balls again after a turn is always a group effort, and I thought the premise translated perfectly to the original story of The Frog Prince.

The Yukon is home to only one species of frog, The Wood Frog. Although they’re much smaller than the frog depicted in this piece, I still wanted them to serve as the basis for its colouring. These guys are very tough and resilient (even freeze resistant!) which, again, I thought tied itself back nicely to the persistence the Frog Prince shows in his efforts to act kindly towards someone who doesn’t really deserve it.
